Abstract

A cold coating process that may usefully be applied to pharmaceutical tablets and the like comprises providing cores with two or more coatings comprising a syrup coating and one or more additional coatings of syrup and/or powder wherein, in at least one coating stage syrups and/or powders are used which contain finely-divided oxides of metals or silicon which have been formed as an aerosol by thermal decomposition of suitable volatile compounds in the vapour or gaseous phase in the presence of agents having an oxidizing or hydrolysing action and are recovered as an aerogel and which have a particle size smaller than 200 mm . Suitable metal oxides are aluminium oxide or titanium dioxide. In the coating process, the cores may be coated initially with a syrup containing the oxide, or with a conventional syrup coating and then have an application of a coating powder containing the oxide, or with a conventional syrup coating and then have an application of a coating powder containing the necessary oxide. The presence of the oxide in the coatings speeds up the drying times and results in a much quicker coating process than possible hitherto. In an example, cores were coated with a syrup comprising gelatina alba 15 parts, distilled water 50 parts, mucilago gummi arabic 130 parts, saccharin syrup (70 per cent) 805 parts; the syrup coated cores were then dusted with a powder comprising calcium carbonate 35 parts, silica 16 parts, talc 25 parts, saccharin 20 parts and gum arabic 4 parts. These coating stages may be repeated as often as required to build up a sufficient coating thickness.
