Abstract
1410673 Bearing Materials CHRYSLER CORP 20 Dec 1972 [27 Dec 1971 (3)] 58882/72 Heading B2E A bearing material comprises a substrate and a working surface layer thereon, the working surface layer comprising a smooth, continuous surface layer of hexagonal crystals of Fe 2 O 3 embedded in a matrix containing iron oxide and an inorganic binder, the crystals having their base planes aligned parallel to the working surface. The working surface layer is preferably porous, the Fe 2 O 3 layer being formed by rubbing the working surface, preferably with heat and pressure. Preferably the substrate is a stainless steel regenerator seal. To form the coating a porous Fe 3 O 4 and FeO layer may be formed on a wrought iron substrate by controlled oxidation then skimming off the top layer of Fe 2 O 3 . A molten Na 2 S binder is then used to impregnate the porous iron oxide before the "break-in" (i.e. rubbing) to form the hexagonal Fe 2 O 3 crystal layer. Alternatively, a mixture of Fe 3 O 4 and binder may be flame or plasma sprayed onto a substrate, or a mixture of Fe 3 O 4 and a leachable substance e.g. NaCl may be flame sprayed onto the substrate before leaching the substance and impregnating with binder e.g. Na 2 S. In the latter case an intermediate layer may be formed by first flame spraying a layer of Fe 3 O 4 without NaCl. The flame sprayed mixtures may contain nickelcoated graphite optionally with boron nitride. Suitable binders are BaSO 4 , CdSO 4 , CaO, Ca 2 P 2 O 7 , CaSO 4 , MnSO 4 , Na 3 PO 4 , Na 2 SO 4 , Na 2 S, Na 2 HPO 4 , ZnS, ZnO, TiO 2 , CaF 2 and NaBO 2 . Example 4 illustrates the use of an alloy of 86% Fe, 4% Cu and 10% C as a substrate which is flame sprayed with a mixture of Fe 3 O 4 and iron before leaching the iron with an electrolytic echant (5% HBF 4 solution) and impregnating with Na 2 S. In operation some Fe 2 O 3 crystals may rub off onto the surface contacted by the bearing material.
