Abstract
1408648 Gems UNION CARBIDE CORP 19 Dec 1972 [20 Dec 1971 4 Dec 1972] 58467/ 72 Heading A3H [Also in Division Cl] Gem stones are produced by masking imperfections of corundum crystals by contacting the surface of the crystal with a powder comprising alumina containing 1-30% by wt. of TiO 2 and 0.25-20% by wt of a metal oxide colourant and heating the crystal in contact with the powder at 1600-1850C for 2-200 hours. The oxide colourant is preferably an oxide of iron, chromium, nickel or vanadium. The crystal may be subjected to a further conventional asteriating treatment at 1100-1500C.
