Abstract

Improvement of surface condition of ingots and slab blooms and reduction of thermal losses during casting of steel, especially in continuous casting is effected by adding before casting a mixture of calcium oxide, quartz sand, cryolite as well as reducing and oxidising agents. Where hydrated or hygroscopic material is used, it is treated with hydrophobic agents. The hydrophobic agent is an organic silicon compound in an organic solvent used in 0.1-1.5% by weight of mixture. An example cites the use of 42% lime, 23% quartz sand, 25% cryolite, 6% graphite and 4% aluminium treated with 0.5% methylpolysiloxane in toluene.
