Abstract
1281022 Enamelling metals G. SCHAUMBURG 25 June 1969 [25 June 1968] 31985/69 Heading C1M A rolled metal product, particularly of steel, is coated with an enamel, as it emerges from a stand of a rolling mill sufficiently hot to fuse the enamel, and, with or after the enamel, a corrosion-resisting medium. The enamel may contain SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , CaO, MgO, Na 2 O, K 2 O and B 2 O 3 , and may be applied as the enamel frit or as a mixture of the oxides. The corrosion-resisting medium is preferably zinc borate, which produces a zinc layer. The enamel may be removed from the metal before applying the corrosion-resisting medium, in which case a conventional coating of lacquer or plastics material may then be applied. The enamel is said to preserve the descaled state of the rolled metal. A reducing agent, e.g. a reducing gas or finely-divided metal, may be applied before or with the enamel. In the embodiment shown, rolled metal 3 emerges from a stand 1 of a rolling mill and is enamelled in chamber 4, wherein powdered enamel is blown as a dispersion on to the metal, the enamel being removed subsequently after cooling, by rollers 6, after which the corrosion-resisting medium is applied by sprayers 7. Specifications 1,277,755 and 1,281,021 are referred to.
