Abstract

Heat sensitive, pref. smooth metal surfaces are coated with a material consisting of cohesive metal silicate fibres, and silicon dioxide sol and/or gel by (a) bonding the coating material to the metal surface by means of a coating of zinc silicate applied to the metal surface optionally together with a layer of silica sol and/or gel between the bonding layer and the coating material, the bonding coating, the intermediate layer, and the side of the coating directed towards the metal surface being wet initially and (b) drying. The inter layer also contains metal silicate fibres, pref. Zr silicate fibres and/or asbestos fibres. The coating material contains a silicon dioxide gel produced by non-thermal gelling of silica soln. in situ. Firmly bonded coatings of material with a good thermal insulation on smooth metal surfaces e.g. furnace walls are obtd.
