Abstract

A high temperature resistant seal which will tolerate temperatures in excess of 1400 DEG C comprises a fireproof sealing material comprising fibres of ceramic material, preferably formed into tissue and/or soaked in a fireproof binder. Silicon dioxide and aluminium oxide are suitable ceramic materials and waterglass is a suitable binder. Alternatively the binder consists of silicate-forming bonding materials, such as a mixture of kaolin and borax, which will transform at high temperatures into silicates. The binder can be alloyed with temperature resistant particle fines e.g. of metal and/or silicon dioxide, to increase heat resistance. For use in sealing flanged joints the material may be bonded to one or both sides of a metal support washer.
