Abstract

The individual particles of enfoliated vermiculite are enveloped substantially at room temperature with a waterproof and fireproof coating, e.g. of sodium silicate or a silicone compound. The enfoliated vermiculite may be first dried at a slightly elevated temperature and placed in a drum rotating about an inclined axis and containing a solution of the coating medium.ALSO:The individual particles of exfoliated vermiculite are enveloped substantially at room temperature with a waterproof and fireproof coating, e.g., of sodium silicate or a silicone compound. The exfoliated vermiculite may be first dried at a slightly elevated temperature and placed in a drum rotating about an inclined axis and containing a solution of the coating medium. The treated vermiculite may be used as an aggregate in building material, and may be moulded into slabs or panels with, if desired, additions of adhesives and pigments.
