Abstract

A coating with high fire resistance is formed by spraying with a layer of glass fibres or mineral felt bonded with a hardenable binder, and painted on its exposed surface with an intumescent paint. The coating is esp. for treating joists to prevent their weakening by temp. rise. The layer of glass or mineral fibres if pref. sprayed on in suspension in a volatile solvent with the addition of a bonding agent. After treatment with intumescent paint the fire resistance conferred is two to three times that afforded by a layer of glass fibre alone.
