Un compuesto de N-[2-1-hidroxietil)-3-oxopropil]amina de la formula [III] (Ver formula); en donde el anillo B representa un anillo de benceno que puede substituirse; W representa átomo de oxígeno o átomo de sulfuro; Y representaátomo de oxígeno, átomo de sulfuro o NR., R?? representa átomo de hidrogeno o un substituido; Z representa un grupo metileno substituido que contiene por lo menos un centro quiral; R5 representa un grupo aralquiloxicarbonilo o un grupo alcoxicarbonilo; R6 representa átomo de hidrogeno, un grupo aralquilo, un grupo aciloxi, un grupo sililoxi tri-substituido o un grupo alcoxi; o ambos R5 y R6 se unen en sus extremos y se combinan con el átomo de nitrogeno adyacente para formar grupo ftalimido, y un procedimiento de los mismos se describen; dicho compuesto [III] es util como un compuesto de partida de agentes antibacteriales de beta-lactama.
