Abstract

El beta-caroteno, licopeno y cantaxantina, como carotenoides representativos, y, en una extension menor, el ácido retinoico, un retinoide representativo, se someten a una oxidacion extensa para suministrar substancias, de las cuales el beta-caroteno oxidado es un modelo, las cuales tienen propiedades utiles como agentes no toxicos contra la proliferacion de células, tumores y virus tumorigénicos, y son utiles como promotores de la diferenciacion celular. Es evidente, del análisis químico de la mezcla altamente oxidada de productos de beta-caroteno, que ninguna de las varias formas de la vitamina A está presente o solo en cantidades menores. Asimismo, las actividades biologicas de la cantaxantina y licopeno oxidados, que forman la vitamina A, indican la presencia de substancias activas, diferentes de la vitamina A. Aunque las actividades citostáticas y de promocion de la diferienciacion del beta-caroteno oxidado se asemejan a las de la propia vitamina A, en general, sus efectos son más potentes, en una amplia variedad de circunstancias. Diferentemente de la vitamina A, el beta-caroteno oxidado, segun la invencion, no es toxico. El carotenoide oxidado es una mezcla de compuestos que se pueden dividir en un numero de fracciones, de acuerdo con el peso molecular y la polaridad. Las fracciones exhiben una actividad contra el cáncer comparable a, o mayor que, la actividad contra el cáncer comparable a, o mayor que, la actividad del carotenoide oxidado no fraccionado.
