Abstract
Un motor (1) de combustión interna que tiene un mecanismo (2) de relación de compresión variable tiene mecanismos (7, 8) de válvula variable para una válvula (4) de admisión y una válvula (5) de escape, respectivamente. Si se detecta un mal funcionamiento en el mecanismo (2) de relación de compresión variable, que controla una relación de compresión mecánica por medio de un motor (31) eléctrico, a partir de la amplitud de las variaciones en una relación de compresión real, entonces si se corta el suministro de combustible para el motor de combustión interna, una válvula (14) reguladora se abre más amplia de lo que sería el caso si el mecanismo (2) de relación de compresión variable no estuviera funcionando mal, reduciendo por consiguiente la presión negativa dentro del cilindro durante la carrera de admisión. Además, se adelanta la temporización con la cual la válvula de admisión se cierra y se retarda la temporización con la cual la válvula de escape se abre, incrementando la presión positiva dentro del cilindro durante las carreras de compresión y expansión. Esto previene que el mecanismo (2) de relación de compresión variable incremente la relación de compresión cuando se pierde el control.
