Abstract
La presente invención se refiere a un elemento de empalme, para su uso en empalmar dos extremos a tope de fibras ópticas a tope, que tienen generalmente diámetros diferentes debido a las tolerancias de fabricación, el elemento se forma de un material deformable y comprende medios que definen tres superficies de soporte de fibras, dispuestos con cada superficie, colocados en un ángulo agudo a una segunda superficie y que definen entre ellas, un pasaje de fibras ópticas adaptado para recibir dos extremos de fibras en una relación a tope, para ser empalmados entre sí; este pasaje tiene una sección transversal generalmente triángular; y medios para sostener cuando menos una de las superficies de soporte de fibras para su movimiento en relación con las otras superficies de soporte de fibras, para jalar a la mencionada superficie de soporte de fibra hacia otra de dichas superficies de soporte de fibras, con una fuerza suficiente para acoplar dos extremos de fibra y hacer que cada superficie de soporte de fibras se dforme uniformemente alrededor de los extremos de fibra, con el mayor de los extremos de fibras incrustado uniformemente en cada una de las tres superficies de soporte de fibras formando dicho pasaje de fibras a una profundidad ligeramente mayor que el diámetro menor de fibra, para acomodar dichas variaciones de diámetro de fibras debido a las tolerancias de manufactura, pero resultando en que dos de los extremos de fibras son llevados a alineamiento coaxial y para sujetar los extremos de fibras con una fuerza comprensiva suficiente para restringir que los extremos de fibras sean jalados fuera del pasaje de alineamiento de fibra, pero con una fuerza insuficiente para dañar a las fibras ópticas
