Abstract

A mechanical optical fiber splice with does not employ any gel material with a matching refractive index, wherein the fiber ends are prepared for intimate axial compressive contact and the fiber end faces are maintained in the splice element in optically aligned intimate contact under axial compression, as the result of heating, elastic deformation or plastic deformation of the splice element. A
fixed clamping mechanism (25) was attached to the actuating tool (17) at the left side of the splice nest (20), and positioned to grip the fiber immediately as it exited the splice. A
second fiber clamp (23) was mounted at the right side of the splice nest (20) on a linear ball slide with approximately 0.1 inch (2.5 mm) travel. A compression spring (26) was in contact with the ball slide, and located opposite the splice nest (20) a screw was mounted on the tool base and was used for adjusting the force that the compression spring (26) placed on the fiber via the ball slide.
