Abstract
본 발명의 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널 구동방법은, 일정간격을 두고 서로 대향하는 기판들(1, 2), 상기 기판들중 하나의 기판상에 서로 평행하게 형성된 복수의 전극들(3, 4), 상기 복수의 전극들(3, 4)과 교차하도록 상기 기판들중 어느 하나(1 또는 2)에 형성된 복수의 전극들(5), 상기 복수의 전극들(3, 4, 5)과의 교차점에 형성되는 복수의 셀들, 상기 복수의 셀들을 구획하도록 형성된 스트라이프상 또는 격자상의 격벽들(8), 및 상기 격벽(8)들 간의 방전공간내에 형성되는 형광체층(9)을 포함하는 구성되는 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널의 구동방법에 있어서, 입력되는 신호에 따라 신호데이터를 기입하기 위해 순차적으로 복수의 스캔펄스들을 인가함과 동시에 데이터펄스를 인가하는 어드레스 단계를 포함하고, 상기 순차적으로 인가하는 복수의 스캔 펄스들의 폭을 서로 다르게 설정하여 데이터 기입을 안정되게 실현하는 것을 특징으로 한다.
Description
본 발명은 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널 구동방법에 관한 것으로, 더 상세하게는 면방전형 AC-PDP에 있어서의 스캔 펄스 폭을 조절하여 첫 번째 라인의 기입오류의 발생을 방지함으로써 기입특성을 개선시킬 수 있는 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널 구동방법에 관한 것이다.
도 1에는 종래의 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널(PDP)의 구성을 설명하기 위한 개략부분단면도가 도시되는 바, 도 1에서 그 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널은, X유지전극(3)과 Y유지전극(4)으로 전면 전극군을 형성하여 전면기판(1)에 형성되며, 그 위에 유전체층(6)이 형성된다. 또, 그 전면기판(1)의 대향측에는 후면기판(2)에 데이터전극으로서 어드레스전극(5)이 형성되고, 그 위에 유전체층(7)이 형성되며, 격벽(8)사이에 형광체층(9)이 형성된다.
이와 같이 구성되는 플라즈마 디스플레이장치의 구동방법은, 프레임 분할구동방법에 의해 1프레임을 6개의 서브프레임으로 분할하고, 각 서브프레임은 서로 다른 유지기간이 설정하고, 각 서브프레임을 조합하여 영상화면의 다계조를 표현할 수 있다. 도2에 도시한 바와 같이, 각각의 서브프레임은 리셋(Reset)기간(a), 어드레스기간(b), 및 유지기간(c)을 포함한다. 리셋기간(a)에는, 패널의 모든 셀의 방전조건을 균일화 또는 초기화하기 위해 공통접속된 X유지전극(3)에 350V 이상의 쓰기펄스를 인가하여 모든 셀들을 전면 방전시키고, 다음에 모든 Y유지전극(4)들에 유지펄스를 인가하여 유지방전을 한 후, 공통접속된 X유지전극(3)에 소거펄스를 인가하여 유전체상에 축적된 벽전하를 소거한다. 어드레스 기간(b)에는, 입력된 영상데이터에 따라 표시해야할 셀들을 지정하기 위해 어드레스 전극에 데이터 펄스가 인가되고, 동기적으로 Y유지전극(4)에는 순차적으로 스캔펄스가 인가되어, 표시해야할 셀의 전면 유전체층(6)상에 벽전하가 축적된다. 다음에 유지기간(c)에는 유지펄스를 X유지전극(3) 및 Y유지전극(4)에 교번으로 인가하여, 어드레스 기간에 지정된, 즉 벽전하가 축적된 셀만 유지방전을 한다.
상술된 1서브프레임의 어드레스 기간 동안에, 리셋(Reset)기간에서의 소거펄스인가에 의해 모든 셀의 방전조건 균일화가 이루어진 상태에서 첫 번째 스캔라인부터 스캔펄스를 인가함과 동시에 어드레스전극에는 데이터 펄스가 인가된다. 이때, 스캔펄스와 데이터펄스에 의해 어드레스 방전이 발생되어 균일화된 첫 번째 스캔라인에 속한 셀들에 입력신호 데이터에 따라 벽전하를 형성하게 된다. 벽전하의 형성은 어드레스 방전시에 방전공간내에 발생된 +, - 공간전하가 스캔펄스 인가 기간동안, 통상은 2∼3㎲동안 표시전극들(스캔전극 및 공통유지전극)을 덮고 있는 유전체층상에 축적된다.
또한, 유지 기간에서는 어드레스전극(5)은 그라운드 레벨로 처리되어 있지 않고 하이-임피덴스(Hi-lmpedence)로 처리되어 있으며, 전면 전극군에 형성되는 공간전하로 어드레스전극(5)에 전압이 유기된다. 이는 편의상 플로팅(floating)된 어드레스 전압을 어드레스 유기전압이라 한다. 유지 방전시 그 어드레스 유기전압은, 그라운드 레벨로 처리하면, 유지 방전이 불안정성을 초래할 수도 있다. 따라서, 모든 면방전 구조에서는 하이 임퍼덴스(Hi-lmpedence)로 통상 처리하고 있다.
상술한 구성의 종래의 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널은, 3에 도시된 바와 같이 첫 번째(1st) 스캔라인의 기입오류가 발생하였다. 즉, 기존의 기입방식에서는 스캔라인의 폭이 모든 스캔라인에서 동일하게 인가되는 방식으로, 다시 말하면, 첫 번째 라인에서는 프라임밍 효과(Priming effect)가 없는 상태에서 방전이 개시되므로, 셀 조건에 따라서 방전 지연등이 발생되어, 정상적인 기입이 이루어지지 않는 문제점이 발생되어 왔다.
이를 방지하기 위해 도 4에 도시된 바와 같이 그 첫 번째 스캔 라인앞에 더미라인(dummy line)을 풀화이트(full white) 방전을 시킴으로써 기입오류를 방지하도록 구성할 수가 있다.
이와 같이 더미라인에 별개의 구동부를 형성하여, 풀화이트방전을 실시함으로써 프라임밍 효과(Priming effect)를 얻음으로써 첫 번째 라인의 기입오류가 방지될 수 있게 된다.
그러나, 이러한 방법은 더미라인을 구축하여야 하여야 한다는 문제가 있다. 또한, 더미라인을 구축한다고 하더라도 풀화이트 방전에 의해 표시영역의 엣지 부분이 불필요하게 표시되는 문제점이 발생한다.
따라서, 본 발명은, 상술한 문제를 해결하기 위한 것으로, 면 방전형 AC-PDP에 있어서의 어드레스 기간동안 스캔 펄스 폭을 조절하여 첫 번째 라인의 기입오류의 발생을 방지함으로써 기입특성을 개선시킬 수 있는 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널 구동방법을 제공하는 데에 그 목적이 있다.

이러한 목적을 달성하기 위한 본 발명의 제1실시예에 따른 기입오류방지 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널 구동방법은, 일정간격을 두고 서로 대향하는 기판들, 상기 기판들중 하나의 기판상에 서로 평행하게 형성된 복수의 전극들, 상기 복수의 전극들과 교차하도록 상기 기판들중 어느 하나에 형성된 복수의 전극들, 상기 복수의 전극들과의 교차점에 형성되는 복수의 셀들, 상기 복수의 셀들을 구획하도록 형성된 스트라이프상 또는 격자상의 격벽들, 및 상기 격벽들 간의 방전공간내에 형성되는 형광체층을 포함하는 구성되는 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널의 구동방법에 있어서, 입력되는 신호에 따라 신호데이터를 기입하기 위해 순차적으로 복수의 스캔펄스들을 인가함과 동시에 데이터펄스를 인가하는 어드레스 단계를 포함하고, 상기 순차적으로 인가하는 복수의 스캔 펄스들의 폭을 서로 다르게 설정하여 데이터 기입을 안정되게 실현하는 것을 특징으로 한다.
상기 순차적으로 인가하는 복수의 스캔 펄스들에서, 첫 번째 스캔라인의 스캔 펄스 폭을 기준으로, 그 첫 번째 스캔라인의 스캔 펄스 폭을 가장 길게 하고, 두 번째 이후 순차적으로 스캔 펄스 폭을 감소시킬 수 있으며, 또한, 첫 번째 스캔라인에 인가하는 첫 번째 스캔펄스 폭이 두 번째 스캔라인의 스캔 펄스 폭을 포함한 나머지 스캔 펄스 폭보다 길게 설정하는 것도 가능하다.
이하, 첨부된 도면을 참조하여 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예를 상세히 설명하면 다음과 같다.
본 발명에서는 기존의 기입방식에서 스캔라인의 폭이 모든 스캔라인에서 동일하게 인가되는 방식으로, 즉, 첫 번째 라인에서 프라임밍 효과(Priming effect)가 없는 상태에서 방전이 개시되므로, 셀 조건에 따라서 방전 지연 등이 발생되어, 정상적인 기입이 이루어지지 않게 된다는 점에 착안하여 첫 번째 스캔라인 내지는 그 이후 정상적으로 구동되는 시점까지 프라임밍 효과를 부여함으로써 첫 번째 스캔라인의 기입에러를 방지하도록 구성된다.
즉, 첫 번째 스캔라인에서 안정한 기입을 실현할 수 있도록 첫 번째 스캔라인의 펄스폭을 두번째 스캔 펄스 폭을 포함한 나머지 스캔 펄스 폭보다 길게 설정하거나, 상기 첫 번째 스캔라인의 스캔 펄스 폭을 기준으로, 그 첫 번째 스캔라인의 스캔 펄스 폭을 가장 길게 하고, 두 번째 이후에서 순차적으로 스캔 펄스 폭을 감소시켜 각 스캔라인에 인가하는 것이다.
구체적인 구성이 도 5 및 도 6에 파형도로 도시된다.
도 5에서는, 어드레스기간(b)에서의 첫 번째 스캔라인(Y1)의 스캔 펄스 폭이 두 번째 이후의 스캔라인(Y2…)의 펄스 폭보다 길게 설정된다.
또한, 도 6에서는 어드레스기간(b)에서의 첫 번째 스캔라인(Y1)의 스캔 펄스 폭이 길게 설정되고 두 번째 이후의 스캔라인(Y2…)의 펄스 폭은 순차로 감소되도록 설정된다. 이 경우에는 수회의 스캔라인 뒤에 정상적인 기존의 스캔 펄스 폭에 도달한 때부터 동일하게 스캔 펄스 폭을 유지시킨다.
이와 같이 구성됨으로써 첫 번째 스캔라인의 기입실패의 원인인 셀 조건에 따른 방전의 지연이 발생하더라도 충분한 벽전하 축적이 가능하여, 프라임밍 효과가 없는 첫 번째 스캔라인의 데이터 기입에러를 방지시킬 수 있고 안정된 기입을 할 수 있게 된다.
이와 같은 구동방법은, 반사형이나 대향형 등의 다양한 구조에도 적용될 수 있다.
이상에서 설명한 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널 구동방법의 구성과 작용에 의하면, 면 방전형 AC-PDP에 있어서의 데이터 기입방식에서 스캔 펄스폭을 조절함으로써 첫 번째 라인의 기입오류의 발생을 방지함으로써 기입특성을 개선시킬 수 있는 등의 효과가 있다.

- 일정간격을 두고 서로 대향하는 기판들(1, 2), 상기 기판들중 하나의 기판상에 서로 평행하게 형성된 복수의 전극들(3, 4), 상기 복수의 전극들(3, 4)과 교차하도록 상기 기판들중 어느 하나(1 또는 2)에 형성된 복수의 전극들(5), 상기 복수의 전극들(3, 4, 5)과의 교차점에 형성되는 복수의 셀들, 상기 복수의 셀들을 구획하도록 형성된 스트라이프상 또는 격자상의 격벽들(8), 및 상기 격벽(8)들 간의 방전공간내에 형성되는 형광체층(9)을 포함하는 구성되는 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널의 구동방법에 있어서,입력되는 신호에 따라 신호데이터를 기입하기 위해 순차적으로 복수의 스캔펄스들을 인가함과 동시에 데이터펄스를 인가하는 어드레스 단계를 포함하고, 상기 순차적으로 인가하는 복수의 스캔 펄스들의 폭을 서로 다르게 설정하여 데이터 기입을 안정되게 실현하는 것을 특징으로 하는 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널 구동방법.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 순차적으로 인가하는 복수의 스캔 펄스들에서, 첫 번째 스캔라인의 스캔 펄스 폭을 기준으로, 그 첫 번째 스캔라인의 스캔 펄스 폭을 가장 길게 하고, 두 번째 이후 순차적으로 스캔 펄스 폭을 감소시키는 것을 특징으로 하는 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널 구동방법.
- 제1항에 있어서, 첫 번째 스캔라인에 인가하는 첫 번째 스캔펄스 폭이 두 번째 스캔라인의 스캔 펄스 폭을 포함한 나머지 스캔 펄스 폭보다 길게 설정한 것을 특징으로 하는 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널 구동방법.
