우리나라의 감귤은 대부분 제주도에서 생산하여 생과와 주스로 이용하고 있으며, 이때에 발생하는 부산물은 적절하게 이용되지 못하고 오히려 폐기처분하는 데 어려움을 겪고 있다. 우리나라 제주도에서 생산되고 있는 감귤류 중 가장 많은 수확량을 차지하는 것이 온주밀감(Citrus unshiu)으로서 주스로 이용되고 남은 껍질 등의 부산물은 그 양이 전체 과일 중량의 약 50%에 이른다(Ultrason Sonochem 16: 57-62, 2009). 따라서 이러한 주스 가공 후 발생하는 감귤 부산물을 이용하는 것은 환경오염 문제를 방지하는 측면에서나 경제성 측면에서도 중요하다 할 수 있다. 특히 감귤 부산물의 대부분의 차지하는 껍질은 기능성 소재로서 충분한 가치가 있는 것으로 알려져 있는데, 이러한 껍질에는 과육보다 플라본(flavones), 플라바논(flavanones), 플라보놀(flavonols), 이소플라본(isoflavones), 안토시아닌(anthocyanins), 플라바놀(flavanols) 등의 플라보노이드류가 풍부하게 함유되어 있다(J Food Eng 92: 157-163, 2009). 이들은 항산화, 항균, 항혈소판, 항고혈압, 항바이러스, 항알러지, 항궤양, 항종양, 항염증, 항동맥경화증, 항간독성 활성, 혈중 지방감소 등에 효과가 있는 것으로 알려져 있다(Biomed Chromatogr 19: 138-148, 2005; J Food Safety 28: 567-576, 2008; Biopharm, Drug Dispos 29: 63-82, 2008). 플라보노이드류 외에도 가용성당, 비타민, 펙틴, 유기산, 폴리페놀류 등이 함유되어 있어서(Biomed Pharmacother 62: 579-582, 2008), 알코올 음료, 비알코올 음료, 캔디, 젤라틴 등의 식품가공에 사용되고, 약품의 불쾌한 맛을 제거하는 방향제로도 이용되며, 향수 및 화장품의 제조에도 사용되고 있다(J Food Eng 90: 409-413, 2009). 그리고 감귤주스 제조 후 남는 펄프는 조단백질 함량은 적지만 열량이 높고, 섬유질 및 펙틴 함량이 많으며, 기호도가 우수하여(Meat Sci 68: 269-275, 2004), 육질 향상, 사료 섭취율, 소화율 향상 등의 목적으로 한우, 젖소, 닭의 사료로 이용하는 연구가 꾸준히 있어 왔다. Therefore, using citrus by-products generated after juice processing is important in terms of preventing environmental pollution problems and in terms of economic efficiency. In particular, the peel, which accounts for most of the citrus by-products, is known to be valuable as a functional material. These peels contain more flavones, flavanones, flavonols, isoflavones, and anthocyanins than the flesh. It is rich in flavonoids such as anthocyanins and flavanols (J Food Eng 92: 157-163, 2009). They are known to be effective in antioxidant, antibacterial, antiplatelet, antihypertensive, antiviral, antiallergic, antiulcer, antitumor, antiinflammatory, antiatherosclerosis, antihepatotoxic activity, and blood fat reduction (Biomed Chromatogr 19: 138 -148, 2005; J Food Safety 28: 567-576, 2008; Biopharm, Drug Dispos 29: 63-82, 2008). In addition to flavonoids, it contains soluble sugars, vitamins, pectin, organic acids, and polyphenols (Biomed Pharmacother 62: 579-582, 2008), so it is used in food processing such as alcoholic beverages, non-alcoholic beverages, candy, and gelatin, and as a medicine. It is also used as an air freshener to remove unpleasant tastes, and is also used in the manufacture of perfumes and cosmetics (J Food Eng 90: 409-413, 2009). Additionally, the pulp remaining after making citrus juice has a low crude protein content, but is high in calories, high in fiber and pectin, and has excellent palatability (Meat Sci 68: 269-275, 2004), improving meat quality, feed intake, and digestibility. There has been continuous research on using it as feed for Korean beef, dairy cows, and chickens.

양돈농가는 대한한돈협회서귀포지부의 추천을 받아 도래물축산 영농조합법인(제주특별자치도 서귀포시 중산간서로 688번길 155)을 선정하여 2020년 5월 19일부터 2020년 8월 19일까지 약 3개월 동안 현장실증시험을 수행하였다. 대조군 40마리 및 시험군 40마리 총 80마리의 사육 돼지를 대상으로 시험을 진행하였으며, 시험용 돼지는 이유자돈 이후 비육돼지 (착수일 기준 94일령)을 선정하여 시험이 수행되었다. 대조군 돼지는 일반 돼지 사료를 급여하였고, 시험용 돼지에는 일반 돼지 사료와 감귤 부산물 5%(w/w)를 교반하고 사료를 조제하여 급여하였다. 시험기간 동안 물은 자동 급수 시스템을 이용하였으며, 총 6회에 걸쳐 돼지 체중을 측정하였고, 총 5회에 걸쳐 혈액 분석용 혈액을 채취하였다. 또한, 대조군과 시험군의 섭취량 차이를 확인하기 위해 일별 섭취량을 확인하여 총 섭취량을 계산하였다.The pig farm selected the Dorae Livestock Farming Association Corporation (155 Jungsanganseo-ro 688beon-gil, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do) on the recommendation of the Seogwipo branch of the Korean Pork Association and farmed for about 3 months from May 19, 2020 to August 19, 2020. 실험 시작일로부터 총 5회에 걸쳐 돼지 체중을 측정하고 각 군의 돼지 1마리당 평균 체중을 결과값으로 하여 도 1에 나타내었다. 도 1을 참조하여 보면 감귤 부산물 건조물이 5%(w/w)로 포함된 사료가 급여된 실험군의 경우 대조군에 비해 뚜렷하게 증가하였다(실험군 돼지 1마리당 평균 체중 증가량 67.22kg로 대조군의 돼지 1마리 당 평균 체중 증가량 62.97kg에 비해 106.75%가 증가함). 이러한 감귤 부산물에 의한 체중 증가로 인하여 돼지의 출하 시기를 1주일 이상 앞당길 수 있는 것으로 판단된다.
