Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled ceramics accurately and uniformly imparted with arbitrary color without influencing the production condition, by applying a transition metal oxide to the surface of ceramic powder, pressing the powder and sintering the obtained article under controlled oxygen partial pressure. CONSTITUTION:The surface of raw ceramic powder is coated with a coloring transition metal oxide by magnetron sputtering. The ceramic powder coated with the transition metal oxide is pressed and then sintered under controlled oxygen partial pressure in the system to obtain a translucent sintered ceramic. The amount of the coloring transition metal oxide applied to the ceramic powder can be easily and accurately controlled by controlling the sputtering time. The amount is selected according to the color density, grain size and purity of the ceramic powder and the amounts of a particle growth inhibitor or a particle growth accelerator, etc., and is sufficient at an extremely small amount, i.e. <=10ppm.
