Abstract

PURPOSE:To readily obtain a product of a complicated molecular structure and remarkably high water repellency in high yield, by decomposing serpentine and/or asbestos with an acid and reacting the resultant product with a silane compound in the presence of an acid. CONSTITUTION:Serpentine or asbestos or both are decomposed with hydrochloric, sulfuric acid, etc., and dissolved in preferably a caustic alkali to provide a caustic alkali solution, which is then reacted with a silane compound (preferably trimethylchlorosilane) as a silylating agent in the presence of an acid to afford the aimed compound. Furthermore, the ratio of number of mol of Si in the silylating agent to the number of mol of silica expressed in terms of SiO2 which is a principal component of an acid decomposition product in the caustic alkali solution of the acid decomposition product is preferably >=1 in the silylation.
