Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacutre cyanogen chloride with a simple apparatus in a high yield by reacting sodium cyanide with chlorine in an aqueous soln. of hydrochloric acid and extracting cyanogen chloride from the liq. reaction product.
CONSTITUTION: Sodium cyanide is reacted with chlorine in an aqueous soln. of hydrochloric acid having 1W20wt% concn., and cyanogen chloride is extracted from the liq. reaction product with halogenated hydrocarbon. When the concn. of hydrochloric acid in the aqueous soln. is lower and the amount of hydrogen chloride is smaller, p-cyanogen is by-produced, and when the concn. of hydrochloric acid is higher and the amount of hydrogen chloride is larger, the hydrolysis of cyanogen chloride is caused to reduce the yield of cyanogen chloride. As the concn. of sodium cyanide in an aqueous soln. of sodium cyanide is increased, a side reaction is cuased to reduce th yield of cyanogen chloride, and when the concn. of sodium cyanide is lower, a larger reactor is required. The aqueous soln. of sodium cyanide is adjusted to 2W3wt% in general.
