Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent lowering of vacuum due to flow-in of helium gas to the vacuum tank of a cryostat by applying active carbon tightly to the outer wall of a liquid helium tank and/or the wall body of a temperature shield held at a required cryogenic temperature. CONSTITUTION: A superconducting coil 1 is immersed into liquid helium 2 stored in a liquid helium container 4 insulated thermally from a normal temperature vacuum tank 6 by a tank held at a high vacuum. Molecules other than gas helium floating in the vacuum tank are condensed on the surface of the liquid helium container 4 itself to produce ice. Gas helium can be adsorbed to active carbon 5 applied tightly to the outer wall of the liquid helium tank 4 cooled down to 20 K or below.
