Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the optical transmission loss and distribution deviation of the optical star coupler and to reduce the size of the coupler by using a mixing element formed by curving a plate type transparent polymer in a specific U shape. CONSTITUTION:The mixing element 3 is formed of the L-shaped plate type transparent polymer (e.g. acryl resin) molding which has thickness (t) and width W and curved in the U shape whose radius (r) of curvature is >=5 times as large as the thickness (t). The titled coupler is formed having input and output optical fiber arrays 1 and 2 on both end surfaces of the element 3 opposite each other. When said r/t is >=5 times, the optical transmission loss of the element 3 is reduced below a specific value. If, however, the r/t is made too large, the coupler increases in size, which is not preferable. Further, when the L/W is made larger than a specific value, the characteristics of the mean light distribution deviation between the arrays 1 and 2 are improved.
