PURPOSE:To accelerate the speed of recording by dividing a driving time when a black color is output by a binary output against a single dot to drive a recording head, integrating a head drive circuit which outputs gradients of 2<n> steps against a single dot and mounting said circuit inside the head. CONSTITUTION:An integrated circuit for drive (drive IC) 95 of a heating element 50 which constitutes a recording head 35 is provided with 32 output signal pads 105, and is driven at divided timing in units of 32 bits. Further, a total of 54 drive IC's 95 are used, and the total number of effective heating elements 50a provided is 1,728. Consequently, the effective heating elements 50a are driven at divided timing in units of 32 bits. For this reason, electric current which runs through a common electrode pattern 103 is significantly small, which prevents nonconformity attributed to voltage drop, electrode heating, etc. from occurring.
