Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain reduced iron powder having excellent machinability and mechanical properties after sintering by subjecting the powder to rough reduction and subsequent finish reduction and incorporating composite oxide powder of an MgO-SiO2 system or glass powder as a free-cutting component at a specific ratio therein. CONSTITUTION:Mill scale, etc., are subjected to the rough reduction and the subsequent finish reduction to obtain the reduced iron powder for producing sintered mechanical parts, etc. The free-cutting component consisting of the composite oxide powder of the MgO-SiO2 system and/or glass powder is added at the prescribed ratio to the reducing raw material prior to the rough reduction or finish reduction of the reduced iron powder. Talc, etc., having about 0.5-5.0 molar ratio of MgO/SiO2 is adequate as the above-mentioned composite oxide of the MgO SiO2 system. The preferable grain size of the above-mentioned free-cutting component to be added is about <=0.325 mesh. The above-mentioned free-cutting component is thereby incorporated at 0.1-15wt.% into the reduced iron powder in the form of existing internally in the grains of the powder. The reduced iron powder obtd. in such a manner is harmless at the time of sintering and the sintered parts having the excellent machinability and mechanical properties are obtd. after sintering.
