Abstract
PURPOSE:To suppress precipitation of secondary grains and obtain a high coercive force by adsorbing in advance cobalt and iron ions onto the surface of magnetic iron oxide powder after making the grain surface of the magnetic iron oxide powder hydrophilic while trying to rid a solution of redundant irons. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic iron oxide powder whose crystal system is gammaFe2O3 or identical with gammaFe2O3 is dispersed simply into an aqueous solution as a material so that the grain surface of the magnetic iron oxide powder is treated to be made hydrophilic. Then the following process is implemented in an atmosphere free from carbon dioxide. First, cobalt salt and iron salt are added and mixed into a solution, wherein grains of the magnetic iron oxide powder after the treatment for making them hydrophilic are made monodisperse, so that the content of cobalt therein is less than 4wt.%, and then heated up to a temperature over 60 deg.C to form a slurry. Second, an alkaline substance, whose alkalinity is over 1.25 times as high as that of the magnetic iron oxide powder, is added to the slurry which has been heated and maintained, and a cobalt ferrite phase is precipitated on the grain surface of the magnetic iron oxide powder.
