Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce inner pressure stress applied to the coated pipe and to extend its life by installing nuclear fuel and liquid filler at the upper side of intermediate edge plug which was installed to divide the inside of coated pipe into the upper and lower tiers and by installing a connecting pipe. CONSTITUTION:The upper and lower edges of a coated pipe 2 are sealed by edge plugs 3 and 4, respectively, and an intermediate edge plug 7 is provided at the middle tier within the coated pipe to allow it to be divided into the upper and lower tiers. A nuclear fuel 1 is mounted on the intermediate edge plug 7 keeping some gap with the inner wall of the coated pipe 2. Then, the nuclear fuel is dipped and a liquid filler 5 is encapsulated at the upper tier of coated pipe 2. Also, a connecting pipe 8 which is fixed at the intermediate edge plug 7 and extends upward penetrating the center of the nuclear fuel 1 is provided at the center of the intermediate edge plug 7. The lower edge of the connecting pipe 8 is open to a gas plenum 6 which is formed by the lower timer within the coated pipe 2 and the upper edge is located at a position which is higher than a level 5a of the filler 5 and is open to the upper plenum 9 formed between the level 5a and edge plug 3. In this manner, the inner pressure within the plenum 6 is reduced.
