Abstract

PURPOSE:To make the film resistance of a separator for an alkaline battery uniform to obtain the battery having expected voltage by graft-polymerizing methacrylic acid to a ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymer film whose thickness variation is + or -8% or less. CONSTITUTION:By specifying the content of methacrylic acid in an ethylenemethacrylic acid copolymer to 3-12wt.%, a uniform base film whose thickness variation is + or -8% or less is easily obtained. The separator film obtained is immersed in an about 40% KOH aqueous solution kept at 20-70 deg.C tor neutralization, and washed, then dried. The separator is adequately swelled and its dimension is stabilized after a battery is assembled. Since metacrylic acid is uniformly graft-polymerized from the surface of the film to its inside, the film resistance of the separator is remarkably made uniform, and as a result an alkaline battery having expected voltage is obtained.
