Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:An optically active biphenyl derivative shown by formula I (R is 1-20C alkyl or alkoxyalkyl which may contain halogen; * is asymmetric carbon atom.). EXAMPLE:(+)-4-Hydroxy-4'-(1-propoxyethyl)-biphenyl. USE:Useful as an intermediate for organic electronic materials, especially for liquid crystal materials, an intermediate especially for ferroelectric liquid crystal materials shown by formula II (R1 is alkyl; Ar is aromatic) and further as an intermediate for agricultural chemicals and drugs. PREPARATION:An optically active ether shown by formula III (A is H, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy) is debenzylated to give a compound shown by formula I. The compound shown by formula III is synthesized by condensing an optically active alcohol shown by formula IV with an alkylating agent shown by the formula R-X (X is halogen).
