Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:A liquid crystal compound expressed by formula I (R1 is 6-12C alkyl; R2* is 3-5C optically active group having asymmetric carbon; R3 is 1-6C alkyl; X is -CH2O- or -OCH2- bond; n is 0 or 1). EXAMPLE:(1-Methyl-3-methoxy)propyl 4-(4'-n-octyloxybiphenyl-4-methyleneoxy) benzoate. USE:A ferroelectric liquid crystal compound, having relatively great spontaneous polarization, excellent high-speed responsiveness in image display and useful as a material for large-sized display elements. PREPARATION:OH of a compound expressed by formula II (Me is CH3) is protected with tetrahydropyran and carboxyl group is then reduced with LiAlH4 and methylolated. The resultant compound is subsequently reacted with a compound expressed by the formula R3I and deprotected to form a compound expressed by formula VI, which is then reacted with a compound expressed by formula III and then a compound expressed by formula IV to provided a compound expressed by formula VIII. The obtained compound expressed by formula VIII is finally reacted with a compound expressed by formula IX to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
