Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:An optically active compound shown by formula I (R is 2-10C alkyl; * shows asymmetric carbon atom). EXAMPLE:(R)-6-Hydroxynaphthalene-2-carboxylic acid-1'-methylheptyl ester. USE:The compound has large spontaneous polarization, is useful as an intermediate for ferroelectric liquid crystal and chiral nematic liquid crystal having extremely excellent optical and chemical stability and is introduced to high polymer liquid crystal to give high polymer liquid crystal showing electrooptical effects. PREPARATION:A compound shown by formula (a) is benzylated to give thionyl chloride shown by formula (b), which is treated with oxalic acid chloride to give an acid chloride derivative shown by formula (c). Then this derivative is reacted with any of various optically active secondary alcohol to give an ester derivative shown by formula (d). This ester is further debenzylated with hydrogen in the presence of palladium/carbon to give a compound shown by formula I.
