Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:An optically active compound shown by formula I (R is 1-10C alkyl; * mark is asymmetric carbon). EXAMPLE:(s)-6-Hydroxy-2[2'-(ethyloxy)propoxy]naphthalene. USE:An intermediate for ferroelectric liquid crystal having photochemical and chemical stability, large spontaneous polarization and high response rate. PREPARATION:6-Benzyloxy-2-naphthol shown by formula (a) is reacted with optically active-1-(p-toluenesulfonoxy)-2-(tetrahydro-2'-pyranyloxy)propane in the presence of a base to give optically active-6-benzyloxy-2-[2'-(tetrahydro-2''- pyranyloxy)propoxy]naphthalene shown by formula (b), which is made into a compound shown by formula (c) under an acidic condition. This compound is reacted with an alkyl halide in the presence of a base to give a compound shown by formula (d), which is further reduced and debenzylated in the presence of Pd/carbon catalyst to give a compound shown by formula I.
