Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an acyclic polyethylenepolyamine, in high purity and yield, by contacting monoethanolamine or ethylene glycol with ethylenediamine in liquid phase in the presence of an inorganic compound mainly composed of alumina or silica, at a specific temperature.
CONSTITUTION: An acyclic polyethylenepolyamine containing only extremely small amount of heterocyclic amines, is prepared by reacting (A) (1 mole of) monoethanolamine or ethylene glycol with (B) (pref. 2W10 moles of) ethylenediamine, in the presence of (C) 0.5W30wt%, based on (A)+(B), of an inorganic catalyst composed mainly of alumina or silica, pref. zeolite, active clay, diatomaceous earth, etc., at 250W350°C.
EFFECT: The reaction product is obtained as a free amine, and the process is simple and economical. The catalyst is low-cost, thermally and chemically stable, solid and easily handleable.
