NEW MATERIAL:2-(4-Fluoro-4'-biphenylyl)-5-alkyl-1,3-dioxane of formulaI(R is 1W10C alkyl).
USE: A component of high temperature liquid crystal. It has positive dielectric anisotropy of 6W7, and a broad liquid crystal temperature range at higher temperature side. It has high compatibility, and is suitable for mixing with other liquid crystal compounds. It is also effective to decrease the viscosity of a liquid crystal composition.
PROCESS: The compound of formulaIis prepared by reacting 4-formyl-4'-fluorobiphenyl of formula II with 2-alkylpropanediol-1,3 of formula III in an organic solvent in the presence of an acidic catalyst.
