PURPOSE:To prevent a main transistor from being damaged due to an excessive load current at the time of emissionless condition by detecting the emissionless condition and thereby controlling a timer circuit. CONSTITUTION:Of the secondary current obtained from a secondary coil of a current transistor CT, only the current of the same phase with that of a corrector current of a main transistor TrQ1 of an inverter circuit IV is returned to the base of the TrQ1 through a half-wave current return circuit FB. On the other hand, a timer circuit TM is made to perform time counting action with a signal from the secondary coil. A cutoff circuit ST stops a base current of the TrQ1 with a signal of the time counting finish. In this case, the control of the circuit TM is performed with a detection signal of a circuit EL by detecting an emissionless condition occurring in the last stage of the life of a discharge lamp l with the detection circuit EL so that the generation timing of the time count finish signal is advanced. As a result, the on-time of the TrQ1 can be shortened to prevent the TrQ1 from being damaged.
