Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound which is an intermediate for producing agricultural chemicals, especially nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds that are a molting inhibitor in high purity and yield without forming by- products, by reacting a raw material p-chlorophenol with excess phenol in the presence of a specific catalyst and alkali. CONSTITUTION:p-Chlorophenol is reacted with phenol in an excessive molar amount, preferably >=3 times, more preferably 5-10 times based on the p- chlorophenol in the presence of an alkali using an oxine copper catalyst as a catalyst at 100-250 deg.C, preferably 150-200 deg.C to afford the aimed compound. The above-mentioned oxine copper catalyst is a compound also names copper-8- hydroxyquinolinolate and the amount thereof used is preferably 0.5-10mol.% based on the p-chlorophenol. 8-Hydroxyquinoline and copper chloride may be separately added. The molar amount of the afore-mentioned alkali is 1-3 times based on the p-chlorophenol.
