Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable various information carriers which differ in information pit size to be used by providing a stop which has a luminous flux passing opening with a specific diameter on an optical path for luminous flux which is incident on an objective. CONSTITUTION:Divergent luminous flux emitted by a light source 1 is collimated by a collimator lens 2 into parallel luminous flux, which is reflected by a half- mirror 4 to reach a stop 8, and the luminous flux which is stopped down by the stop 8 is incident on the objective 5 and converged on an information carrier 3 to form a fine spot. The convergence spot diameter W on the information carrier 3 is in inverse proportion to the diameter D of the luminous flux incident on the objective 5, so the effective diameter of the stop 8 is varied to vary the diameter of the luminous flux incident on the objective 5, thereby enabling various information carriers 3 which differ in information pit size to be used.
