Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the size of an optical pickup by slantingly guiding reflected light to a collimating lens which has astigmatism and by obtaining the astigmatism by the collimating lens. CONSTITUTION:Laser light 2 emitted by a laser generation source 1 is collimated by a collimating lens 3 and made incident to a polarization beam splitter 4. The collimating lens 3 has neither spherical aberration nor coma aberration, but has astigmatism. Therefore, the laser light emitted from the collimating lens 3 strikes a four-quadrant detector 15 as astigmatic luminous flux. The astigmatic luminous flux is detected by the detector 15 to detect an out-of-focus state on a disk surface. Further, the laser generation source 1 and detector 15 are provided closely to each other, so they can be stored in one package.
