Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily obtain the roughness required for a media by bringing a gaseous mixture contg. hydrogen fluoride in an inert gas into contact with a glass substrate kept in a specific temp. range. CONSTITUTION:The gaseous mixture contg. 0.01-10mol.% hydrogen fluoride in the inert gas is brought into contact with a glass stock plate kept in the 5-90 deg.C range, by which ruggedness is formed on the surface of the glass stock plate and the substrate for a magnetic disk is obtd. The max. height (Rmax) of the surface roughness consisting of ruggedness is required to be <=1,00Angstrom at 250mum reference length and >=50Angstrom at 50mum reference length; more preferably said height is maintained at <=700Angstrom at 250mum reference length and more preferably, <=400Angstrom at 250mum reference length. The easy formation of the fine ruggedness distributed uniformly without having directivity within the surface on the surface is thereby enabled and the performance required for the media is sufficiently satisfied.
