Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an EPA-containing lipid and EPA useful as a medicine or health food in a large amount with facilitated purification in a short time, by cultivating a specific microorganism belonging to the genus Pasteurella in a nutrient culture medium. CONSTITUTION:Pasteurella.haemolytica SCRC-2288 (FERM P-9425) is cultivated in a liquid culture medium containing one of several kinds of an yeast extract, peptone, meat extract, etc., and, as necessary, a carbon source, etc., added thereto at pH 5-9, preferably pH 7-9 and 5-30 deg.C, preferably 15-25 deg.C for 8-48hr to provide a culture. Microbial cells are collected from the resultant culture and a material containing an EPA-containing lipid is then obtained from the above-mentioned microbial cells by solvent extraction, etc., and saponified to produce free EPA or salts thereof.
