Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance, economically in an industrial scale, with improved productivity, by culturing immobilized cells of microorganisms capable of producing L-lactic acid in a medium containing a carbon source and a nitrogen source.
CONSTITUTION: Microorganisms belonging to Lactobacillus genus, Bacillus genus, Streptococcus genus, etc. and capable of producing L-lactic acid are immobilized in a gel such as polyacrylamide gel, agar gel, etc. to obtain the immobilized microbial cells. The gel containing the immobilized cells is added to the medium for the preparation of L-lactic acid and containing a carbon source such as glucose, fructose, sucrose, etc., a nitrogen source such as CSL peptone yeast extracts, barley root, etc., and phosphoric acid, etc., and cultured under the conventional lactic fermentation conditions. L-lactic acid is separated from the product and purified by conventional methods. As an alternative method, L-lactic acid can be produced continuously by passing the cultivation liquid through a column packed with the immobilized microbial gel.
