Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve activity of an oxidation catalyst by drying and calcining a slurry consisting of specified crystalline vanadium pyrophosphate, coarse grain of silicon oxide having high specific surface area and aq. dispersed soln. contg. specified vanadium-phosphorus. CONSTITUTION:The aq. slurry is produced by mixing the crystalline vanadium pyrophosphate having peaks of X-ray diffraction as shown in Table I as a first component, coarse grain of silicon oxide having high specific surface area as a second component and aq. dispersed soln. contg. vanadium-phosphorus forming vanadium-phosphorus composite oxide by drying, or vanadium- phosphorus composite oxide other than the first component above-mentioned as a third component. The aq. slurry is dried and the obtd. solid is calcined to produce the oxidation catalyst composition. The specific surface area of the coarse grain of silicic oxide, the second component, is preferably >=50m<2>/g.
