Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce a catalyst having sufficient mechanical strength in high yield for use in the production of methacrylic acid made thru adding organic material to a mixture of catalytic elements, molding the mixture and calcining the molded mixture and calcining the molded mixture.
CONSTITUTION: Compounds of catalytic elements such as molybdenum compound, phosphorus compound are mixed together in the presence of water. The mixture is concentrated and/or dried to form gel or powders. Organic material such as cellulose, gelatin is added to the catalytic mixture in an amount of 1W10wt% of the organic material based on the weight of catalytic components. The mixture is molded and calcined. By the calcination, pores having an average pore radius of above 2000Å are formed on the surface of the molded article. Thus, a catalyst having sufficient mechanical strength is produced in high yield. The catalyst is used in the production of methacrylic acid from methacrolein in a fixed bed reactor.
