Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain trimethylbenzene with a high pseudocumene content, by reacting p-xylene with methanol in the vapor phase in the presence of calcium substituted zeolite Y or cobalt substituted zeolite Y as a solid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: p-Xylene is reacted with methanol in the vapor phase at a temperature of 150W300°C to give trimethylbenzene with a high pseudocumene content. In the process, calcium substitued zeolite Y or cobalt substituted zeolite Y is used as a solid catalyst. The catalyst is a calcium or cobalt substituted zeolite Y prepared by the calcination in the presence of steam. The pseudocumene is readily separated.
USE: An intermediate for vitamin E, resin modifier, raw material for coating materials and intermediate for epoxy resin curing agents.
