Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled fiber usable for a catalyst carrier, having a large specific surface area and a high strength, by spinning a mixture of a special rehydratable alumina powder coated with a rehydration inhibitor, with water, a fiber-constituting material, etc., and by rehydrating and calcining the resulting fiber.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A partly rehydratable alumina or a substance containing it, preferably having a particle size ≤3μ, is coated with 0.01W30wt% of a rehydration inhibitor, e.g. stearic acid, and then and mixed and slurried with (B) a fiber- constituting material, e.g. methyl cellulose, at a weight ratio of (A) to (B) of ≥30: <70, and water and/or a water-containing substance. The mixture thus obtained is spun into precursor fiber, which is rehydrated and calcined to give the objective fiber.
EFFECT: An integral structure of the subsrate with the alumina-containing substance eliminates the peeling of the active alumina.
