Abstract

PURPOSE:To make non-destructive reading out of a recording by using linearly polarized light and rotation of the plane of deflection by using a thin film of a chiral compd. the optically rotatory power of which is changed by photoirradiation as a memory medium, projecting laser on the desired point thereof and recording the bits formed by changing the optical rotatory power thereof. CONSTITUTION:The thin film of the chiral compd. the optically rotatory power of which is changed by photoirradiation is used as the memory medium. 2,2'- dihydroxy-1,1'-binaphtyl which is an optically active material is put as this compd. into a K-cell and is deposited by evaporation on a glass substrate under vacuum evaporation. The laser beam is projected on the thin film formed in such a manner to record the prescribed bits. The desired bits which are thereby formed are read out by rotation of the plane of deflection using the linearly polarized light. The memory medium is made of an org. material to eliminate the contamination, etc., of the medium and to facilitated the formation of the thin film as well as to enable the non-destructive reading out.
