Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the S/N of a reproduced signal at a high density recording region, by detecting the state of magnetization by means of a magnetrooptical effect for a magnetic thin film that is set close and vertically to a magnetic recording medium between two magnetic thin films of high permeability that hold the magnetic thin film of a magnetic head between them. CONSTITUTION:Magnetic thin films 21 and 22 of high permeability are arranged to hold a magnetic thin film 23 containing a magnetization-facilitating axis in the direction vertical to the film surface, A magnetic head is formed with these two films 21 and 22, and this magnetic head is set close and vertically to a vertical magnetized film 11. A light beam 30 given from a laser source 24 passes through a polarizer 25 and is made incident to the film 23 through a lens 25 and via the hole of the film 22. The polarized surface of the reflected beam turns according to the direction of magnetization of the film 23, and the light beam is made incident to a photodetector 29 via the lens 25, a half mirror 26 and a beam detector 28 to be reproduced. The image resolution is decided by using the thickness of a main magnetic pole instead of the size of the beam spot. As a result, the S/N of a reproduced signal is improved at a high density recording region for vertical magnetization recording.
