Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare partly colored sapphire glass with a simple method by irradiating a partly shielded sapphire glass with ultraviolet rays. CONSTITUTION:A partly opened shield plate 2 is put on sapphire glass 1 to be used for cover glass of a wrist watch. In this state the sapphire glass is irradiated with ultraviolet rays for a specified time generated by an ultraviolet rays generator 3 provided at a specified distance. No change is recognized in the part 4 of the sapphire glas 1 shielded by the shield plate 2 by the treatgment, but the part 5 exposed to the ultraviolet rays is discolored brown. By this process, sapphire glass for wrist watch having several colored pattern is obtd.

This is because the titanium oxide contained in sapphire glass is altered by the action of ultraviolet light. The present invention takes advantage of this property and irradiates ultraviolet rays while a part of the sapphire glass is softened, so that part of the sapphire glass becomes colored.

Hereinafter, the present invention will be explained based on Examples. FIG. 1 is a schematic diagram showing an embodiment of the present invention. Ultraviolet rays are irradiated from the ultraviolet ray irradiation device 3. A sapphire glass 1 is placed at a distance of 20 degrees from the ultraviolet irradiation device 3, and a barrier plate 2 with a hole partially formed on top of the sapphire glass 1? put. In this state, ultraviolet rays were irradiated for 1 minute. As a result of this process, the portion 4 of the sapphire glass covered with the shielding plate 2 remained unchanged, and the portion 5, which was exposed to ultraviolet rays through the hole in the shielding plate, was colored brown.

(Fig. 2) This colored sapphire glass can be made to have the same finish on many pieces of sapphire glass by controlling the ultraviolet irradiation conditions. Also, since the glass itself is colored,
It does not peel off. Various colored patterns can be obtained by changing the pattern of the sheet.
