Abstract

PURPOSE: To inhibit the generation of malodorous pollution derived from mercaptan, when mercaptan odor is removed from a mercaptan-contg. waste soda solution, by treating the waste soda solution in vapor-liquid contact with sulfurous acid gas.
CONSTITUTION: A waste soda solution A-1 is filled in reaction vessels 1a, 1b. At first, sulfurous acid gas is injected from a cylinder 2 into the first reaction vessel 1a and brought into vapor-liquid contact with the waste soda solution to decompose and remove mercaptan. Thereafter, excess sulfurous acid gas B-1 is introduced into the second reaction vessel 1b and brought into vapor-liquid contact with the waste soda solution A-1 to decompose the solution A-1. The sulfurous acid gas B-1 is further introduced into a neutralizing vessel 3 in which alkali liquid C is filled, neutralized in the vessel 3, treated with an adsorbing layer 4 of active carbon, and then discharged into the air. On the other hand, the deodorized soda solution A-2 is neutralized by supply of alkali liquid D from a reservoir 5, subjected to adsorption in an active carbon adsorbing vessel 6 and then drained as odorless waste water A-4.
