Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a glass composition for molding a lightweight noncombustible inorg. foamed body with superior water resistance, strength and heat insulation by adding a modifier having a specified composition as a blowing agent to sodium silicate.
CONSTITUTION: In the manufacture of foamed glass for building materials and a heat insulator, 92.5W80.0wt% soldium silicate represented by general formula Na2O-xSiO2 (where x is 3.0W3.5) is mixed with 7.5W20.0wt% modifer contg. CaO so as to adjust the CaO content of the mixture to 7.5W15.0wt%. This mixture is melted by heating at 1,100W1,400°C for several 10min W several hr and solidified as a lightweight foamed body with superior water resistance. The modifier contains at least 60% CaO. Calcium carbonate, dolomite or other carbonate combined with one kind of MgO, Al2O3, Fe2O3 or the like may be used.
