Abstract
PURPOSE:To realize the constitution of an efficient optical control device which has small insertion loss and is connected easily to a driving electric circuit, by providing a linear light guide, which is convex sectionally while having a greater film thickness than that of its circumference and is made of a semiconductor single-crystal thin film, on a transparent dielectric. CONSTITUTION:On a sapphire substrate 1, a single-crystal silicon thin film 2 having high resistance is arranged and a curved light guide 4 is about 0.01-1mum thicker than that of the circumference. Consequently, the part of the light guide 4 has higher refractivity than that of the circumference, so incident light 5 propagates along the light guide 4. At this time, the free carrier density of the silicon thin film 2 is set below 10<18>cm<-3> in order to decrease propagation loss with 1.3-1.5mum wavelength. Further, since the semiconductor single- crystal thin film is used for the light guide, it is connected easily to a driving electric circuit and the efficiency of an optical control device is improved.
