Abstract
PURPOSE:To decrease the difference in concentration of mercury vapor, smoothen the mobility of mercury vapor, and thereby prevent any generation of the arc swing of an electric-discharge lamp, which is obtained by fusing and joining elemental tubes made of quarts glass, by restricting both the inner diameter of joining parts and the variation in the inner diameter of each elemental tube. CONSTITUTION:In making an electric-discharge lamp, the distance between the electrodes of which exceeds 100cm, by fusing quartz-glass elemental tubes 3a and 3b, the maximum inner diameter, A, and the minimum inner diameter, B, of each glass elemental tube 3a or 3b, which is within 10mm. from a joining part M along the direction of a tube axis O, are adjusted to satisfy the relationship of 0.95A<=B so as to restrict the variation in the inner diameter of the elemental tube 3a or 3b. Thus selected elemental tubes 3a and 3b are joined so that they are symmetrical with respect to the tube axis 0. By preparing a glass bulb in such a manner, the difference in concentration of mercury vapor is decreased, and the mobility of mercury vapor is increased.
